How can I be a better driver?

On Behalf of | Aug 15, 2018 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

It’s up to all Texas motorists to drive safely. This entails following the laws, being courteous, and taking care to make safe driving a priority at all times. Even if you’ve been driving for a number of years, the following tips from Business Insider can help your refresh your memory and improve your driving ability.

Maintain situational awareness

Many people have a false sense of security while in their vehicle that can leave them feeling insulated. In fact, it’s best to have a read on the whole situation at hand, including other vehicles surrounding you, road conditions, weather patterns, among many other factors. Looking ahead of you on the road and remaining alert will allow you to anticipate issues and react accordingly.

Hide distractions

Driving distractions can take on many forms, but smartphones are especially dangerous. Using a smartphone behind the wheel entails all three types of distraction, which are cognitive, manual, and visual. Your best bet is turn off your device while driving to prevent yourself from being distracted. Even hands-free devices can be problematic, as holding a conversation is a cognitive distraction that takes your focus off the road.

Follow the rules

Never cut corners, even if you’ve been driving for an extended period of time. Not coming to a full stop at a stop sign or turning right when not allowed may not seem like a big deal, but these behaviors may result in a serious accident over time. Make sure you always follow the rules of the road to the letter. Doing so will make your behaviors predictable to other drives while also ensuring you can react to situations in a safe manner.
