Steps to Take After a Car Accident

by | Jul 29, 2018 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

It’s a sad fact that accidents can happen to even the most cautious Texas drivers. While you can’t always prevent car crashes from occurring, knowing how to react in the aftermath can be extremely helpful. In this case, Esurance.com offers the following step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Focus on Safety

The first step is to ensure the safety of yourself and anyone else involved. If serious injuries occur, someone must contact emergency services right away. Also, remember that even seemingly minor injuries may need medical attention. Things like whiplash often present a few hours after the accident and can involve a great deal of discomfort. In the event there are no injuries, try to move your vehicle off the road. If this isn’t possible, set up warning flares or alert triangles to notify other drivers.

Step 2: Contact Law Enforcement

Next, contact police to the scene of the accident. They’ll ask questions of you and anyone else present for the creation of a police report. When speaking with the police be honest but don’t take blame or accuse the other driver of negligence. You can also request a copy of the police report, which is useful if you plan on making an injury claim.

Step 3: Take Information on the Scene

Where did the accident occur? How many other drivers were involved (and what are their names)? What were the conditions like at the time? Noting the information at the time of the accident will keep it fresh in your mind and is also extremely helpful when negligence is a factor. You should also speak with any witnesses about their perspective, as they can provide an unbiased version of events.
