Texas man in drunk driving accident sentenced to 10 years

A Texas man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for driving under the influence and killing a 10-year-old boy. He admitted to drunk driving and pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault. The court handed the man a 10-year prison sentence for intoxication manslaughter. He has to serve half his sentence before he is eligible for parole.

The accident happened when the man ran a stop sign and hit a 10-year-old boy as he was crossing the street. The boy was on his way home with his mother to prepare for football practice and was hit by the man’s car just three blocks from his home. He was taken to the hospital, put on a respirator and died the next day. The man had been drinking and was on his way to pick up his one-year-old son from the babysitter who lives nearby.

During the trial, the defense attorney stated that the driver was a good man who made a terrible mistake. He hoped the jury would be lenient and offer probation. On the opposing side, the district attorney pushed for a stronger sentence to show the community that drunk driving is serious and is punishable with prison time.

After the sentence, the boy’s mother read an impact statement to the driver. She described how the death of her son has devastated her family and hopes that the memory of killing her son haunts him for the rest of his life. Drunk driving is a punishable crime in Texas. Successful litigation in drunk driving cases can help victims pick up the pieces after their losses and move forward with their lives.
