How can I drive safely on the highway?

by | Nov 25, 2018 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Many motorists in Texas will travel great distances this holiday season. That can mean a lot of highway driving, which can pose a risk to motorists if they don’t take the proper precautions. The following tips from Nationwide are crucial in this case so that you and your family make it to your destination safe and sound.

Stay out of the passing lane

The left lane is the passing lane, which means only those drivers passing other vehicles should utilize it. In this case, never drive in the passing lane for an extended period of time, as you could face a greater risk of an accident since you’ll be traveling at faster speeds. Driving in the passing lane could also call the attention of law enforcement, which may cost you money or even worse.

Take a wide view

It can be easy to develop tunnel vision when driving on the highway. However, you’re best served by taking a wide view of the road, especially what goes on in front of you. If another driver makes a sudden maneuver, you’ll have more time to react if you’re paying attention. Scanning the road frequently will allow you to notice any potential hazards.

Watch your blind spots

When a vehicle is in your blind spot it’s impossible to see them using your mirrors alone. This can be a challenge when changing lanes on the highway, especially when traveling at high rates of speed. When changing lanes, be sure to physically look for other vehicles to prevent being taken by surprise. Also, watch for vehicles that may have inadvertently strayed into your blind spot.
