In January 2013, a Texas man died when police officers allegedly Tasered him to death. His family is now filing a wrongful death lawsuit against those officers and the city of Marshall. They claim that the police officers used excessive force when they used a Taser gun to subdue the man, which resulted in his death.

The incident happened after police officers responded to a disturbance call at the man’s residence. When the police officers arrived at his house around 8:30 p.m., they found the man worked up and unclothed outside. In order to subdue him, the police officers used a Taser gun. According to his sister, they Tasered him at least three times while she was there and possibly more before she had arrived.

When his body became immobile, the sister begged the officers to take her brother to the hospital. They allegedly ignored her plea, loaded him into a police cruiser, and took him to Harrison County Jail. Once they arrived at the facility, the man was unresponsive and died less than an hour later at 9:40 p.m. The lawsuit alleges that police used excessive force to subdue the man, even though he did not make threatening gestures or actions toward the officers.

Wrongful death lawsuits can be challenging and difficult cases. It is a painful process for families having to deal with the loss of a loved one in addition to filing a lawsuit for wrongdoing. Texas courts can help families cope with wrongful deaths by making those responsible accountable for their actions. Families can often be awarded financial compensation for funeral expenses and receive emotional support after losing a loved one.
